PNG lacks attitude to reach altitude, not resources!

When comparing Papua New Guinea with other countries of the world we are very rich in natural resources but very poor in development. The last year’s survey by World Bank showed that PNG is one of the ten most poor and corrupted nations in the world. Why?

The difference between the rich and poor countries is not the ages of the country. Some countries like India and Egypt that are more than 2000 years are still poor. On the other hand, countries like Canada, Australian and New Zealand 150 years old that were very poor are developed and rich countries today.

The difference between rich and poor countries does not reside in the available natural resources. Japan has a limited territory with 70% to 80% mountainous, inadequate for agriculture and cattle raising but it is the second world economy. Other examples are Switzerland and Singapore which do not have many natural resources but are also advance in economy.

Race and skin color are also not important. Its not that we are rated poor because Papua New Guineans are black or Australia, America, China and Japan as rich because they are whites.

What is the difference then? The difference is the “attitudes” of the people that framed along the years by education and culture. On analyzing the behaviors of the people in rich and developed countries, it was found that the great majority follow the following nine basic principles: 1) Ethics 2) Integrity 3) Responsibility 4) Respect for laws and rules 5) Respect for rights of other citizens 6) Work loving 7) Strive for saving and investments 8) Will of supper action, and 9) Punctuality.

When comparing these principles with the attitudes that Papua New Guineans have, there is a big difference. Almost all of us about 99% never possess and follow these principles in our daily lives.
We are not poor because we lack natural resources or because the government is failing us. We are poor because we lack ‘attitude’. Therefore, every individual needs to comply with these nine functional principles and change our attitudes because it is the “attitude” that will take PNG to altitudes.

Bada,
Thanks for your brilliant idea in raising this issue..You and I and even others out there know that our country is one of the most resourceful country in the world and it is also one of the poorest country in the world and my heart is shrinking for that as a true PNGean...We know that we have abundant resources from both the land and seas and yet we have seen any long term tangible changes in our country.I think that most of the properties owned by the state were built during the colonial times by other people and as result they wearing out, a classic example are the six national high schools in the country.Anything that has little impact in the country is managed privately churches and other NGOs therefore they are in good state...Otherwise, I can summarize that our government has failed us a lot and therefore it really needs to seriously educate those "bigbels" who are in charge of those government departments if it is considering of advancing this country..We can be rich with resources but we will be still poor like this until our selfish leaders develop a better idea on managing our resources wisely and take our country foward...

Thank you for adding your discussion here. I sometimes cry to my self when i see lifestyles of my poor people out there in remote Tsak valley and Lower Lai. Or other rural areas of the country i go. Extreme poverty is devised and it is the lifestyle lived by almost 2/3 of the 6 million plus population of PNG.
Bro, as you have mentioned in your discussion there is no major infrastructure developments in the country. There are no improvements and maintenances to the 60s established 6 national high schools, hospitals, police stations, district HQ, bridges, roads and many to mention.
The moment we are reading and writing this articles tones and tones of our natural resources are ending up overseas. We have very poor laws to protect the resources. A good example, Oil & Gas and Mining Acts of 1998 and 1992 respectively. In these acts only 19.4 % of the total revenue remains in the country (State) while rest is up to investors and shareholders of the company. Same applies to other resources like timber, fish etc...
This is a serous thing that the government needs to look at before we suffer the consequences of our own careless attitude. Enough of sitting spectator to so called exploiters. This is our land where the great God has created us and place on. Thank you very much for the discussions. I think we have to air our voice like this in any form of communications coz it might be heard one day. God knows us and the future of PNG.
