Where Wantoks Meet!

.
IT is very sad to see that the giant Ok Tedi Mine, Porgera, and Lihir, the major revenue makers of the country have closer to their lifespan. They started their operations in the 1980s and 90s and they are very old. The mining industries in the country have contributed much to the economy of PNG for the last 34 years.
The closure of Misima and the Ok Tedi Mining Limited, which is under review for another 5 years, gives a signal to the Government that many of the nation’s oldest mining industries will come to the end of their lifespan as they are non-renewable resources.
It’s a big challenge for the Government and the people of PNG. We must always know that non-renewable resources will come to an end one day. When that happens, what will be the Government’s major sources of revenue to sustain the growing demands of the people?
Now many countries are major aid contributors because they have the interest in our natural resources. After all resources are gone, PNG will be left like an empty tin on the street. Now is the time PNG has to reach its maturity stage.
It is 34 years of independence and PNG should have already reached some kind of standard like other countries in the world.
So far nothing much has been done to the nation regardless of resources we have in abundance. The Government must do something right now to raise the standard of this nation. No time for poverty and corruption. If other countries in the world can prosper, PNG can do it too. The great God has created all men equal.
I feel we are going backward, fuelled by a chronic attitude problem and a high level of official corruptions and bravery.
The Government must do something that will sustain the nation in the future after the resources are gone. Signals by the giant mining company Ok Tedi Mining Limited cannot be taken lightly by the Government.
There is still time, the Government needs to check itself out and properly plan what they can do economically to sustain the country when giant mining companies shut down their operations in the country.
This is an urgent call to the Government to act now before it’s too late.
